Could I apply this hair color creme only to the gray strands of hair around my face for coverage or would it be better to purchase this new root touch up for that.

You can use the color for that, however, you will have a lot of color left over which would be a waste. My advise, find a friend who regularly colors their hair with a color that is close to yours. Offer to help her color her hair, if you can have just enough to touch up your grey spots.
